Abstract

This editorial introduces the first issue of the Contemporary Journal of English Language Teaching (CJELT) and explains why the journal was created. First, we look back at several important developments in English language teaching (ELT) publishing and professional organizations that helped ELT grow into an international field. We then discuss important changes in teaching methods, multilingual education, assessment, and the growing use of generative artificial intelligence in teaching, learning, and research. Finally, we explain the scope of CJELT and describe the journal’s commitment to diamond open access, fair peer review, editorial responsibility, and participation by teachers and researchers from around the world.
